Not to be confused with Network Administrators who manage and support the network, or Network Engineers who build and repair it, Network Architects are responsible for the planning and design of data and communications networks. The responsibilities of these roles will overlap in some organizations, especially in startups and SMBs, however most enterprises and government agencies employ specialized professionals (or teams of professionals) in each position.
Programmers and System Professionals will usually have some experience provisioning network hardware. Network Engineers will usually be familiar with scripting, automation and system administration. These functions are, very different, and requires different skill sets and experience.
Network professionals design, deploy and maintain the physical and logical structures that allow communications among systems.
OSS professionals design, deploy and maintain the computer systems and storage required to allow programs or applications to function.
Programmers create software or scripts to automate manual functions and increase productivity. network engineering

New entries into the Engineering world. A third party certification will facilitate the first job as a Jr. Network Engineer or "Technician".
Usually in positions of Tier 1 support. network engineering
min. 2 years Carrier experience or 4 years Enterprise.
Fully understands MEF services, QoS profiles, ACLs, and L3 Protocols. Works in a team and may specialize in one or more areas. Most often Tier 2 support. Some exceptional Sr. Network Engineers will fulfill Tier 3 Support. telecommunications network engineering
Minimum 6 years Carrier experience or 10 years Enterprise.
Fully understands L2 and L3 protocols, Control Plane Policies, ACLs, management and reporting systems, scripting, updates, policies and procedures for operations.
Sr. Network Engineers will be in Tier 3 support and sometimes in "Last Resort" functions.
In addition to hard technical skills, network architects need to understand the company’s business needs in order to design an efficient, secure and scalable network that aligns with strategic goals. With a firm grasp on the business issues, the network architect can begin to craft the network blueprint, carefully considering aspects like which hardware, software and cable infrastructure will be best suited to the project at hand.
A high-level position, Sr. Network Architect jobs require 15+ years of relevant experience, strong business acumen, management and teaching abilities.
Regular interaction with the Executive Team is required. The ability to articulate complex concepts in non technical terms is key to a Sr Architects success. telecommunications network engineering
This position requires basic understanding of the OSI stack and how "sessions" work.
The position usually entails managing TACACS or RADIUS server databases and other LDAP oriented services. network engineering telecommunications
A Security Engineer will have at least 18 months of experience in various firewalls and authentication systems. An understanding of routing protocols and ACLs is also required. More recent requirements include Virtual and Managed firewalls and SDN/NFV pods. network engineering
This position requires an acute understanding of security protocols, standards and deployment methods as well as switching and routing. Additionally an in depth understand of the OSI model layers 4-7 are a must. telecommunications network engineering
Manages enterprise networks, generally less than 500 elements.
A good understanding of L2 protocol structures is important.
More advanced requirements can require an understanding of MAC SEC, ELINE and ETREE deployments. network engineering
Programmers are not just object assemblers that would be found in a web development or gui environment. They will be proficient in one or more base languages like C, Pascal, and/or Assembler. They will also have a good working knowledge of scripting interfaces like Python, Java, Lisp and Prolog.
In addition to the programming and scripting skills of a programmer, Artificial Intelligence / Deep Learning programmers have specific exposure to the existing algorithms employed in data or matrix identification. They will also be familiar with SQL query tools.
In the enterprise world this is one of the most important positions. The Solutions Architect has a good understanding of protocols, network structures, applications, virtualization and the future road map of technology both hardware and software.
Also very important in the enterprise world. As companies attempt to rationalize hardware and software investments outsourcing of computer systems and software to the cloud can bring both efficiencies and cost savings.
Wrong steps in when choosing a solution or vendor can have a devastating impact on the company's operations.
The Cloud Architect listens to the company, evaluates solutions and presents detailed plans to the company for both short term and long term tactics, and milestones.
Often the company will ask the Cloud Architect to manage the deployment. network engineering
